Sun Kanglin: Full of confidence in Olympics

The first day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Road Cycling Invitational Race came to an end at the Juyongguan Great Wall on the afternoon of August 18. In a post-match interview with the official website of the event, Sun Kanglin, deputy secretary general of the Beijing municipal government, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sport, and president of the event organizing committee, said: "This is a pre-Olympic rehearsal which will play an important role in our preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. The organizing work of this event is so good that it even surpasses our anticipated effects. We're full of confidence in hosting next year's Olympics. "
Sun Kanglin continued, "Today's event went through 8 districts and counties in Beijing. The governments in these places have contributed a lot to our success. The road of the course is even, the environment clean and the greening work also well done. Besides, a large enthusiastic audience gathered along the course, cheering for the cyclists by waving flags and crying. It's estimated that about 0.2 million citizens along the course cheering for the event today. Both the hardware and software facilities operated normally in complete accordance with the plan. Various links were well connected, corresponding to anticipated results."
The team of this road cycling invitational race has altogether 992 people, including over 500 volunteers, 300 sponsor personnel and over 100 working personnel of the organizing committee. Because the course of the road cycling race is very long and passes many districts and scenic spots, the public security, armed police, transportation and security departments of Beijing are under great pressure. Over 1,200 traffic armed policemen are said to have been dispatched for this event. In addition to armed police, traffic police, police and security guards, over 10,000 policemen are mobilized for the race. Sun Kanglin was deeply moved, "To ensure the smooth proceeding of this event, the security and transportation departments in Beijing have exerted a great amount of efforts. They did a lot of preparatory work to coordinate and arrange the armed force. The security and traffic armed force mobilized today amounted to over 10,000. Despite the scorching heat today, they held fast to their post from morning to evening, endured much hardship and strictly observed their duty. Their diligent sweat also ensured the smooth and excellent proceeding of this road cycling invitational race. I'd like to thank them again! "
In order to reduce the flow of motor vehicles in the streets, evacuate traffic jams and guarantee that this race goes on smoothly, Beijing started to practice the motor vehicle single and double number system during the event. From August 17, the motor vehicles on the streets of Beijing have been indeed much reduced, resulting in smoother traffic. Sun commented, "Indeed, Beijing has made great efforts to guarantee the success of the event. Not only does the event go on smoothly, but also we are very touched along the course. This results from the common support of all the citizens of Beijing and also from the joint endeavor of all circles in the society."
"A rehearsal before the 2008 Olympics, this event plays a very important role." stressed Sun, "Until now the organization work of the whole road cycling race has been going on very successfully, not different from our anticipation. The problems that worried us before were public security and environment etc, for example, the sudden appearance of stray dogs in the course or the sudden fall of a bottle from an overpass. Thorough and careful deployment was carried out to dismiss all the problems before the race. The smooth holding of the event as expected is accumulating precious and rich experiences for us to prepare for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and make us more psychologically prepared for hosting the Olympic Games. We’re full of confidence in holding the next year's Olympics! "
