General Information of Chaoyang District
The Chaoyang District is located in the east and northeast of Beijing downtown area between 39.48 and 40.09 North Latitude, 116.21 and 116.42 East Longitude. It is adjacent to the Tongzhou District in the east, to the Haidian, Xicheng, Dongcheng and Chongwen District in the west. To its south, there are two districts of Fengtai and Daxing; to its north, there are two districts of Shunyi and Changping. The Chaoyang District is the largest suburban district in Beijing with 28km from south to north and 17km from east to west , with a total land area of 470.8 square kilometers, among which the area with constructions is 177.2 square kilometers.
The Chaoyang District has jurisdiction over 22 subdistrict offices and 20 area offices.

In recent years, the Chaoyang District has accomplished its strategic transformation from area economy to regional economic development and its economic strength tops in Beijing. In 2003, the GDP in the district is RMB 68.42 billion yuan, increasing 15.6% in comparison with that in 2002; the financial revenue of the district government is RMB 5.66 billion yuan, increasing 14.0%; the total amount of fixed-assets investment is RMB 27.37 billion yuan, increasing 31%; the total volume of retail sales of social consumer goods is RMB 29.8 billion yuan, increasing 10.2%. In 2003, the average disposable income of urban population is RMB 13,887 yuan; the net income of farmers is RMB 9,300 yuan, increasing 11% and 10.8% respectively. As for the consumption structure of the residents, it gradually changes from a food-clothing pattern to more enjoyment, housing, auto and communication equipments become new consumption focuses.
The economy in the Chaoyang District develops rapidly in recent years and the growth rate of its GDP is 10.2%, 15.9%, and 15.6% in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively. The proportion of its primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industries in GDP is 1.2: 44.2: 54.6 in 1998 and 0.4: 28.1: 71.5 in 2003. The leading position of the tertiary industries in the economic growth is continuously enhanced, including modern services of financial and information consultation, intermediate services, chain business organizations, storage and material distribution, as well as rapidly developed new service sectors of real estate, culture, sports, travel and recreation. The secondary industry keep optimizing its structure during the industrial adjustment; high-tech industry and modern manufacturing industry of electronic information, biological medicine and automobiles maintain their promising development and become the main force driving the growth of the secondary industry. The primary industry backs off from the production of commodity grain, which indicates that the great progress from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture and green industry has been achieved.
Over 60% of foreign institutions in Beijing are located in Chaoyang District, together with 3,000 foreign companies and 167 international news offices. Among 158 World Top 500 enterprises in Beijing, two thirds of them choose Chaoyang District. Except for Russia and Luxemburg, all other foreign embassies in China are located in the district and there are three embassy areas in Jianguo Men Wai, Sanlitun, and Liangma He. The fourth embassy area is under construction in the New Wangjing District. There are over 60 first class hotels in Chaoyang District, topping in the city. Among 32 five-star hotels in Beijing, 12 of them are in the dictrict. Besides, many facilities for foreigners are also in this district, including International Conference Center, China World Trade Center, International Conference and Exhibition Center, Sino-Japanese Youth Exchange Center, Yansha Shopping Center, CITIC Building, International Club, International Store, Huaxiang Villa, and village for returned oversea Chinese.
The Chaoyang District is the place where education, technology, and culture institutions gather. There are 159 central and city scientific and technological institutes and 1,037 private technological enterprises, which effectively promote economic growth and technological progress in the district. There are 28 colleges in the district, accounting for 22.8% of the total number of high education institutions in Beijing. There are over 260 education institutions for adults and 7 special schools. The district also homes 17 media and publishing companies including People??s Daily and Radio Beijing. China Central Television and Beijing Television Station also plan to move to the district. In addition, there are 15 professional cultural groups and art colleges, two sites for radio and television program broadcasting, one library,three museums, 16 theaters, 47 cultural stations or community cultural centers, and 603 social cultural entertainment places. The main stadiums and gymnasiums of the Asian Games and Olympics are all located in Chaoyang District. Apart from 14 stadiums in Olympics Park, there are two reconstructed or expanded stadiums in the district and these account for one half of all Olympics stadiums in Beijing (please refer to the Distribute Map of 2008 Beijing Olympics Stadium and Gymnasium), which makes Chaoyang District the sports center in the city.
