Dongcheng District, situated on the east of the central axis of Beijing, is one of the central districts of the capital, covering an area of 25.38 square kilometers, with a population of 642.200 people which consist of 38 nationalities.

Dongcheng District is a place of magnificent treasures. It used to be an area of concentrated activities of the Neolithic Man over 20.000 years ago. Since then the kindling of civilization has been carried on generation after generation on this place of sacred land. As the central part of the inner city of the ancient capital of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368AD),the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644AD) and the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911AD) for nearly 700years.this district boasts rich and abundant sediments of historic and cultural relics including 16 National key Cultural Relics for preservation which are still standing to this day such as the Palace Museum, the imperial College and the Yonghe Lamasery, which account for 7% of the nation's total figure and 43% of the total figure of Beijing.

In 1999 Dongcheng District was conferred the title of National Advanced City (District) in the Construction of Spiritual Civilization. it has established of twin districts with Chong Road Ku District of Seoul and Shinjiuku District of Tokyo and friendly contacts with over a dozen districts (cities) of ten countries including the Central District of Moscow, Maple Ridge of Canada and the Eighth District of Paris, In addition, Wangfujing Street has signed an agreement of sister streets with Champs-Elysees Avenue of Paris.
