General Information of Haidian District
Haidian is located on the northwest of Beijing, with magnificent geomantic omen. The towering Taihang Mountain from the west crosses with the Yan Mountain here, forming a natural and splendid fender. The Beijing-Miyun feed canal pierces eastward through the whole territory from the north. A million and a half hard-working and intelligent people live on the land of 426 square kilometers.
The picturesque scenery of Haidian is a great place that has cultivated outstanding people. Since time immortal this has been a good place to go for sightseeing and relaxation. The lofty West Mountain, the scenic garden forest, the criss-crossing rivers and the water springs are everywhere, attracting the inspiration of the learned scholars as well as tourists from home and abroad.
Haidian with an established history enjoys a good reputation throughout the world for her beautiful mountains and rivers, outstanding talent and culture, and a great deal of ancient sites.
Because of the beautiful mountains and rivers, Haidian has been the fundamental venue for construction of temporary dwelling palace for emperors while on traveling, temples and synagogues, and royal gardens. There are the tranquil Dajue Temple dating back the Liao Dynasty, magnificent Biyun Temple of Yuan Dynasty, exquisite Wuta Temple from Ming Dynasty and the Temple of the Big Bell (Dazhong Temple) that houses the "King of Bells", the Yongle Bell of Ming Dynasty. Each has its own characteristics.
Construction of gardens was at its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Shao Garden in the Peking University and the Tsing Hua Garden in the Tsinghua University were once universally acclaimed sites during Ming Dynasty. Among the dozens of private gardens here are the popular Yuan Ming Yuan, once a royal garden better known as "Garden of all Gardens"; the Summer Palace at Wanshou Mountain, now include as world's cultural heritage; Jingming Garden at Yuquan Mountain; Jingyi Garden at the Fragrance Mountain and Changchun Garden, etc. Today, we could still reminisce the glorious past
